A Guide to choosing the fishing rod to Fit your needs.

Different fish and conditions require different types of fishing rods. Think about what kind of fishing you're going to do before heading into the shop. Are you going to be fishing for bass? Maybe crappie or bream? Are you going to be fishing in heavy cover; Lilly pads and grass?

If you are just starting out, and really unsure as to how much interest you will have in fishing. I recommend you try a less expensive spincast rod and reel combo. Zebco offers a great selection of these and provide great quality for the price, and will suffice enough to wet your appetite for fishing. If you choose to go with the combo I recommend you look for the Zebco 33 Gold Spincast Rod & Reel Combo
(more on reels in lesson 3)

Now, if you have been lucky enough to have had a friend or family member introduce you to fishing. And have used their more expensive equipment. Odds are your appetite to fish is well wet, and you may want to invest in more expensive and better reacting fishing gear. But there is no need to mortgage the house and sell the kids to get started. As your knowledge of fishing grows you will become more in lightened to the importance of strength, flexibility, and sensitivity in the fishing rod, and will be better able to make a knowledgeable purchase of gear. Don't throw a chunk of money into fishing gear until you know what you are buying and how to use it. You will end up with a large investment and a lot of fishing gear that never gets used because it does not suit your fishing criteria. And belive me, as your fishing interest grows, you will gradually move on to more expensive, and better producing gear, but wait until you know what you are shopping for.

Below are a few tips to use when choosing a new fishing rod

  1. Check the grip of the fishing rod. Be sure the handle fits snugly and comfortably in your hand.
  2. Pick the length of rod. 4½- to 6-foot rods work well for lighter bait and fish such as perch, bream and crappie. The shorter rods will also work well in areas with heavy cover. Rods 6½ feet and longer are good for bigger bait, longer casting distance and harder fighting fish such as large mouth bass and smallmouth bass, also stripped bass, catfish and so forth.
  3. Test for flexibility. Hold the rod in your hand as if you are casting, flip the end, and watch the tip for movement. You will get better at judging the flexibility as your fishing knowledge grows.
  4. If you try buying used fishing rods, check the rod for hairline cracks on the pole. When testing flexibility, listen for any cracking noise from the tip of pole.
  5. Bring along a friend to help when buying a new rod and have your friend place the rod tip against his Adams apple and speak in a low voice. If the rod has good sensitivity you should feel the vibrations in your hand while holding the grip at the butt end of the fishing rod. Test this on several different rods to see the difference. Better rod sensitivity will produce more hook-ups.
  6. Most sporting goods stores and bait shops that carry fishing rods have experts and employees that fish the local waters that can help guide you in your fishing rod purchase. And if you have friends or family that fish, by all means ask them for advise.
