Comic Book Memories!

I recently turned 40, and one of my self-prescribed therapies for the, “OMG! I’m getting old!” feeling was to go through and chunk old stuff I had collected over the years.

I was cleaning out a closet that had been substituting for a storage room for years when I came across a box of comic books that I had began to collect. I decided to go through them and see how bad the comics were damaged and get them in comic book bags with backing boards to preserve them. As I looked through them I found myself reading them.

These I wouldn’t throw out. After all, aside from the fact that there are few things that seem to go up in value over years the way comic books do; sitting down and reading a comic made me feel young again.

I reminisced about going into a convenience store with my mother as a child, after begging until I got her to buy me a cherry ICEE and a candy bar; a comic caught my eye. I pushed my luck and begged again until Mama finally gave in and bought that comic book.

As I sucked on that ICEE, and I nibbled on the candy bar, the images in that comic book held my attention like nothing else ever had. The only thing that distracted me from the art was a couple cases of brain freeze. Mama felt the need to check on me as the only times I was ever that quiet was when I slept, and when I was doing something I shouldn’t.

But I was not up to trouble, just getting hooked on the colorful comic book art work, and words that I was yet too young to know how read. I didn’t really get into collecting them and really taking care of them till I was 16 when a new friend introduced me to a comic book store, the value and joy of collecting comics, and how to take care of them.

I stopped buying them, for a long while, except for the occasional one that caught my eye, due to marriage, work, and adult life in general. But here I am again, just having fun going through my comic books, scanning the covers, and enjoying the art work, and now I can even read the words and get lost in the wonderful adventures, and sharing the cover art with you.

It’s good to be and feel young even at 40! Comic aint just for kids!
